Boomerangs for Children – The Ideal Introduction to Boomerang Throwing

An afternoon in the park, no screen in sight, and your child enthusiastically chasing a piece of wood that just flew as if by magic. That's exactly what makes a boomerang one of the best outdoor gifts for children – if you choose the right model.

Because often, that's where the problem lies: many children's boomerangs from the toy aisle fly poorly, break quickly, or are simply too heavy for small hands. We'll show you what really matters, from what age it's suitable – and which of our models is best for your child.

Why a Boomerang is a Great Gift for Children

  • Activity instead of screen time. Throwing, running, catching – a boomerang guarantees outdoor fun.
  • Promotes coordination. The interplay of throwing technique, observation, and catching playfully trains hand-eye coordination.
  • Instant sense of achievement. When the boomerang truly returns for the first time, the excitement is usually immense – a great experience for self-confidence.
  • Shared time. Whether with parents, siblings, or at a child's birthday party – a boomerang is most fun when shared.

From what age is a boomerang suitable for children?

This primarily depends on two things: the weight of the boomerang and the throwing power required.

  • From approx. 8 years: A light model like our München is a good way to start. It requires little force and forgives an imperfect throw.
  • From approx. 10 years: Children with a bit more strength and throwing experience can opt for the sportier London.
  • Younger than 8? You know your child best – the decision is yours. However, it is absolutely essential that your child never throws alone, but always with your supervision – and only when the throwing area is truly clear of other people.

Ultimately, individual motor skills matter more than exact age – some 7-year-olds are more skillful than some 9-year-olds.

Wood or Plastic – What to Look for When Buying?

In the toy aisle, you often find inexpensive plastic boomerangs. They certainly have their place for the very first, carefree contact – but they also have disadvantages: they often fly less precisely, break more easily on impact, and often end up quickly in the corner of the toy box.

A wooden boomerang, on the other hand:

  • flies much more stably and returns more reliably
  • is more robust and can withstand a fall on asphalt
  • feels higher quality – from experience, this motivates children to keep at it
  • is more sustainable if made from FSC/PEFC-certified wood, like ours

Our boomerangs are made from multi-layered flight plywood – light enough for children's hands, but sturdy enough to forgive beginner's mistakes.

The Right Throwing Technique for Beginners

Even the best boomerang doesn't fly back on its own – technique makes all the difference. The good news is: it can be learned with a little practice, and we have detailed instructions on how to throw a boomerang, including a video tutorial. It's best to practice the first throws together – that takes the pressure off and makes it more fun right away.

Safety when throwing boomerangs with children

A few simple rules ensure that the fun remains undisturbed:

  • Our boomerangs are deliberately kept light and small – this means the risk of injury is inherently low compared to larger, heavier models. However, this does not replace supervision: Children should never throw alone, but always accompanied by an adult.
  • Always throw in an open, flat area free of obstacles – both fixed and living.
  • Only throw when the area is truly clear of other people.
  • Throw in turn, everyone else at a safe distance behind the thrower.
  • When catching: always catch at the side of the body, never directly in front of the face – if in doubt, let it fly past rather than trying to catch it uncertainly.
  • If uncertain: it's better to explain once too often than not enough.

Also designed for left-handed children

Good to know if your child is left-handed: Our Munich model is also available in a special left-handed version, including its own throwing instructions. You can find more about this in our article on Boomerangs for Left-Handers.

Our Recommendation for the Perfect Children's Boomerang

For an easy start, our München Boomerang is the first choice: light, beginner-friendly, suitable from 8 years – and like all our models, handmade in our father-son workshop, with shapes developed together with boomerang world champion Heinz-Willi Dammers. For slightly older or more experienced children, take a look at our London Boomerang.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a boomerang dangerous for children? With proper instruction and supervision, the risk is low – most "accidents" happen when throwing uncontrollably without enough space. Our safety checklist above will help you prepare well.

How heavy is a boomerang for children? Our Munich model is deliberately kept light so that even smaller children can throw it well.

How much does a good children's boomerang cost? Our handmade wooden boomerangs are available from €27.90 – for that, you get genuine craftsmanship from our workshop instead of mass-produced goods, which usually end up in the corner much faster than inexpensive plastic alternatives.

Does my child need their own model, or is one boomerang enough for the whole family? Both are possible – our boomerang set is ideal if several family members want to try out different models.
