The evolution of boomerang throwing: From its origins to world records
Boomerang throwing has undergone a fascinating evolution that extends far beyond its original use as a hunting tool by Australian Aborigines. Thousands of years ago, the boomerang was used to hunt prey in flocks of birds. But the boomerang's history isn't limited to Australia – evidence of its use can be found on other continents, such as the Americas and Africa. Interestingly, the oldest boomerang isn't from Australia at all, but was found in the Carpathian Mountains and is over 20,000 years old. Today, the boomerang is primarily an outdoor sports device used by people of all ages and genders worldwide. Both men and women participate in boomerang sports across all age groups, and even children are discovering the joy of throwing boomerangs. What was once confined to its continent of origin has now developed into a popular sport in Europe, Asia, and South America.
Boomerang sport has even spawned official world championships and regular world record attempts that redefine the limits of what's possible in boomerang throwing. A wide variety of disciplines make these competitions a captivating spectacle.
World record: The longest returning boomerang in the world
One particularly impressive world record is that of the longest returning boomerang in the world. This record holder has an imposing wingspan of 2.74 meters, and the record was set on April 28, 2014, at the Kia Oval Cricket Ground in London, United Kingdom, by the British Boomerang Society and The One Show. The boomerang was made of carbon fiber and weighed 1.3 kg. To meet the Guinness World Record rules, the boomerang had to fly at least 20 meters and then return to the thrower at a distance of at least 10 meters. The London cricket stadium provided the stunning setting for this spectacular world record attempt.
While record-breaking boomerangs reach impressive dimensions, the boomerangs in our online shop are naturally more manageable. We especially recommend a gentle introduction for beginners in this outdoor sport. The "Munich" boomerang, a three-winged design with a wingspan of 26 cm, is ideal for beginners and children aged 8 and up. For those looking for a more robust piece of equipment, we also recommend the "London" model, also with a 26 cm wingspan. These models are not only suitable for beginners but also make perfect outdoor gifts for men or anyone looking for a unique gift idea. But that's not the only record in the world of boomerang throwing.
