Why Does a Boomerang Come Back – and What to Do If It Doesn't?

You threw, the boomerang flew away elegantly – but instead of returning, it just landed? This happens to practically every beginner, and usually it's due to one or two easily correctable details, not the boomerang itself. Here you'll find the most common causes and how to fix them.

Briefly explained: Why a boomerang returns at all

A boomerang flies back because its wings have an asymmetrical profile – the top side is slightly curved, the bottom side flatter, similar to an airplane wing. The rapid rotation creates the so-called gyroscopic effect: the interaction of angular momentum and unequal lift distribution steers the boomerang on its characteristic curved path back to you. For practical purposes, this basic understanding is sufficient: if the boomerang doesn't come back, something is usually wrong with the throwing angle, wind, or rotation – less often it's the boomerang itself.

The most common reasons why your boomerang doesn't come back

1. Incorrect throwing angle

By far the most common mistake for beginners. A boomerang must be thrown almost vertically (slightly tilted, approx. 10–20° from the vertical), not flat like a frisbee. If it's thrown too flat, it flies straight like a discus instead of curving. If, on the other hand, it's completely vertical or even tilted in the other direction, it tends to fly downwards and may hit the ground before it can complete its arc.

Solution: Consciously ensure you hold the boomerang almost upright and throw it at this inclination. A trick here: Some throwers start at the correct angle, but then unconsciously twist their wrist shortly before release – make sure to maintain the angle until you let go.

The target height also plays a role: Throw straight or slightly upwards, not too steeply. A good trick for practicing: Use a tree or a prominent spot on the horizon as a visual target and try different heights to find the best trajectory for you.

2. Too little or too much rotation

The boomerang's return depends significantly on its rotational speed. If it isn't "snapped" powerfully enough from the wrist when released, it rotates too slowly and loses altitude prematurely, instead of flying the curve.

Solution: The swing should primarily come from a quick wrist movement at the moment of release, not just from the arm. Throw at a slight angle of about 45° (to the right for right-handers, to the left for left-handers) instead of straight forward, and make sure to keep your upper body stable instead of rotating too much – this ensures a more controlled, cleaner throw.

3. Incorrect wind conditions

Wind is the most underestimated factor when throwing a boomerang. Too strong wind, gusts, or wind from the wrong direction can throw even a technically clean throw off course.

Solution: Face the wind and throw the boomerang at an angle of approximately 45° against the wind – never throw directly with the wind, as this makes the trajectory unstable. If you're unsure about the wind direction: Throw a few blades of grass into the air and observe where they are blown. In completely calm conditions, it helps to throw a little more forcefully so that the boomerang gets enough energy for the complete flight path.

4. Obstacles or unsuitable terrain

Trees, buildings, or uneven terrain change local air currents and can disrupt the flight path, even if the throw and wind are otherwise correct.

Solution: Throw in as large and open an area as possible, with no obstacles nearby.

5. The wrong model for your experience level

Some models are more forgiving of beginner mistakes than others. 6. A boomerang for the wrong hand

7. Inferior craftsmanship

With very cheap boomerangs (often made of thin, insufficiently sanded plastic), the shape itself is sometimes not right – in such cases, even the best technique only helps to a limited extent. Have you found the optimal angle and correct rotation for one model? Congratulations! The great thing is: The basic principles apply equally to all boomerangs, but each model has a slightly different characteristic. If you try a second model, you may need to readjust briefly – this is normal and not a setback.

Step-by-step: How to find your mistake

  1. First, check the wind – throw 45° against it in light wind, throw a little more powerfully in calm conditions
  2. Pay attention to the throwing angle – almost vertical, not flat
  3. Throw with a strong wrist flick for sufficient rotation
  4. Switch to a more beginner-friendly model if necessary
  5. Practice in as open and sheltered a place as possible

Go through these points in order – usually, it's a combination of two factors, not a single big mistake.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for the first throw to work? This is very individual – some manage it on the first try, others need a few attempts on different days. Practice and the right wind conditions make the biggest difference.

Does a boomerang return in every wind? No. In too strong wind or completely calm conditions, it becomes significantly more difficult. Light, consistent wind is ideal.

Is a more expensive boomerang automatically easier to throw? Not necessarily more expensive, but boomerangs with higher quality craftsmanship and well-thought-out shapes are much more forgiving of beginner mistakes than cheap mass-produced goods.
